Is there a way to monitor GPS signal status?

I'm trying to add an icon in my app that represents the current GPS status (the same status shown on the Android status bar).

I haven't found a way of doing it in the docs. Should I use watchPosition? I'm afraid it could drain the battery just for a simple icon in the app (I'm not really interested in the position itself, just the current GPS status).
