The following line in https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/install/#installing-ruby

adduser --disabled-login mastodon

will set the login shell to /usr/sbin/nologin and therefore the following line

su - mastodon

results in

This account is currently not available.

unless used with -s /bin/bash

This happened to me on Debian 12.

I think I've run into this in testing as well.
