If we consider the KISS principle, building and maintaining a chat system might be better off out of scope for neko. While it is part of the main project, having it is likely to attract common feature requests for chat systems, like #253 #234 #216 or bug reports like #356 while taking focus off of the main purpose of neko, the shared environment. Some people don't even need it #31 or want to use something else #242.

That's not to say neko-chat wouldn't be great as a side project, if someone wanted to dedicate the time to doing it really well. A simple, lightweight, modular, embeddable, discord-style chat room is a pretty neat thing to have for a lot of different use cases. Separate modules are just cleaner, and don't split focus or increase project bloat, and are much more reusable.

I'm personally looking into element-hq/hydrogen-web for my own purposes, so that it is integrated with a matrix room, though the project is not yet stable so I couldn't recommend it for use here yet. Just wanted to throw the idea out there.
