Removing kernel does NOT remove /usr/src tree associated with that kernel #853

I have been having warnings about low disk space on my root drive for some time. Today I looked into the problem and found almost 3G of space consumed in my /usr/src tree by code for kernels long removed from my system as updates are applied.

Please have the appropriate /usr/src directories removed with their kernel to prevent this causing problems for other users.

I am running linux mint 20.3 x64 currently with the 5.15.0-94 generic kernel.

Observing the mint update install of that kernel shows that it adds the hwe headers package, but the uninstall of a kernel via mint update does NOT remove the hwe headers package associated with the kernel being removed.
