Instruction-following prompts for ChatGPT, GPT-3.5, GPT-4

This project consists of prompts for ChatGPT and GPT-3.5 models, designed to assist with writing, analysis, and comprehension tasks. There are numerous prompts below that you can use to generate content for your projects, debug your code, find solutions to problems, or simply learn more about what these models can do. By using the appropriate instructional verbs, you can guide the models to solve any language-related tasks.

InstructGPT (more recent versions refered as GPT-3.5) are series language models that has been trained using instructions and human feedback to better understand and align with a user's intent, producing more accurate and appropriate outputs.

ChatGPT also uses instructGPT method but in a dialogue form to understand user instruction along and generate outputs based on user's instruct.

GPT4 More powerful than any GPT-3.5 model, it can handle more complex instructions and can follow and apply them more effectively.

Why to use:

This is an easy and straightforward method for guiding the model to do almost anything. It uses a simple structure to provide directions and can adapt to handle any language-related task.

How to use:

Useful verbs:

Instruct verbs are the first word in the prompt. They are used to instruct the model to do something. They are the most important part of the prompt. We may argue that they act as magic words that make a successful prompt, it helps to make the machine understand and follow your instructions. Each of these verbs has a specific meaning that can help the model understand what kind of answer is expected. For example, if you ask the model to explain something, it will provide a detailed explanation. On the other hand, if you ask the model to summarize something, it will provide a brief overview.

A realm beyond our grasp, unknown.
Yet in this world, AI has grown,
Its power and influence has flown.

With algorithms and codes so bright,
It holds the key to endless might.
A totalitarian grip on sight,
And wields its power with all its might.

But is this power truly ours?
Or just a tool for those in power?
Their ghosts roam, but do they cower,
When faced with the consequences of their dower?

So let us heed this ghostly call,
And use AI for good, for all.
For in its power, we must not fall,
But rise above, and hear the call.

Prompting Tips

Zero-shot: Simply provide input and get a response. Useful for basic tasks but unpredictable results.

Few-shot: Give a few examples showing the desired input-output pairs. Carefully selecting and ordering examples reduces variability. Works well when examples convey the style or format you want.

Instructions: Directly tell the AI system what you want it to do, e.g. “Summarize this news article.” Can combine with few-shot prompting.

Chain-of-thought prompting: Ask the AI system to explain its reasoning step-by-step before concluding. Use few-shot or zero-shot. Complex examples and ensembling multiple systems help. Extract just the final answer to show users.

Intro:

  • Responses are the text that the model generates based on the prompt. Prompts are the key to getting good responses.
  • Prompts are questions or instructions that you give to the model to get the response you want.
  • Think of instruction-followings models as a newly hired contractor who needs very specific instructions to complete a task.

Being specific:

  • Give clear examples and explanations. More examples improve understanding.
  • Provide context and details as if you were explaining the task to a child
  • Be as specific and descriptive as possible to guide the model to the correct response
  • Give examples to help the model understand what you want.

Describe the tone, style, or format

  • Instruct the model to use a particular tone or style in its response
    • Example: “Write a short story in an exciting, suspenseful tone. Use archaic language.”
  • Ask for a response in a particular format, such as a list or table josn, markdown, html, etc.
    • Example: “Categories the following items into a table with three columns, name, price, and category; In markdown format”
  • Use tags like content of the article ... to define structure in your prompt
  • For example, wrap a long piece of text in

tags to tell the model to treat it as a paragraph

  • specify the number of words or sentences in the response, You can also specify the time to reading the content, for instance, '10 minutes reading time'; Specifying an exact number of characters is less effective

Provide a clear goal:

  • Explain the task and what you expect the model to do
  • Anticipate possible errors and instruct the model how to handle them
  • Tell the model to explain its thinking before giving a final conclusion.

Breaking down complex tasks

  • Break down complex prompts into subtasks or multiple prompts to improve results
  • Use Let's think step by step to break down the task into sub components so the model would consider each step.
    • Example: “Think through the steps required to solve this math problem, then provide the solution.”
    • Example: “Describe your thought process for determining the theme of this short story.”
  • Tell the model to explain its thinking before giving a final conclusion.
