Does it make sense to have a PIL Image traittype in here? If so, it would add a dependency. Or it could be an optional dependency.

Most of these types have now been set up to have optional dependencies (i.e. if you use the ndarray one, it assumes you have numpy). As such, I have no strong opinions either way.
