1. It searches by xpath whereas the surrounding code searches by css. Search expressions should be converted back to css, with the helper figuring out the xpath.
2. text = field.element.text redundancy.
3. See if webrat truly does not support this out of the box. Maybe a newer version does. If not, send a patch there.
