Apple added support for NBD devices in Sonoma 14 with the VZNetworkBlockDeviceStorageDeviceAttachment API. The Go language bindings to HVF have a PR to add support which I have tested and works well.
It's possible to use other virtual disk formats via the qemu-nbd utility. I can confirm their test utility allowed me to install and run a macOS Sonoma VM on VMDK and QCOW2 disks. I was not in a position to test with a NAS.
Would this be considered for VirtualBuddy? The benefits are allowing more traditional VM disk formats to be used and not have issues when moving APFS sparse files that are there default format for the framework.

I am also looking to see Redhat's NBDKit https://github.com/libguestfs/nbdkit is another option for creating NBD block devices for VMs.
