Duplicate the VM but with a new serial number...

Hello,
It is fast to duplicate the VM but it keep the same serial number ... is there an option to have a new one generated to avoid potential conflict?

I've tried to implement this before, however due to how the macOS installation is personalized for the hardware and given that the same thing happens when you install a VM, the system won't boot because the hardware identifiers no longer match the personalized OS install.

AFAIK there are ways to repair this sort of thing from recovery mode, but they're not very reliable and probably not significantly easier or faster than just creating a new installation.

That being said, it's an area I plan on doing additional research in the future.

Thanks, maybe an option who can duplicate by a re-install of the VM with the same configuration will be enough ... saving all the steps to create one..

Hello, this was a great find since VMWare is dying. I was wondering if you know how to change the serialnumber for the vm. Need to modify it for a jamf project. Can you please let me know how to do this?

There is private API in Virtualization for setting a VM's serial number, however in my experiments I couldn't get it to actually do anything (the VM would always use a random SN). I suggest submitting a feedback report to Apple requesting this feature.
