That's great. Heads up also that we're bringing in a swath of personal protective equipment in OBI. So wearing facial mask can reference "facial mask". |

Let me know about PPE terms. My current office at FDA is the office dealing
with all PPE approval and EUA authorizations.
There are standard terms to reuse: GMDN or FDA's product code.

Hi Damion,
Thanks for sharing the material. I already identified the issue of the term
N95 mask. It should be N95 respirator, which is your synonym. N95
respirator is a better technical and official term. N95 mask is a lay
person language.
Regarding the use of term "medical mask", we might use "surgical mask"
instead.
I will take the terms back to discuss with my FDA internal folks, and get
back to you.
I will create another column to collect FDA feedback if it is OK with you.

Do you have many medical device terms? I am working on a medical device
ontology.

Damion,
I have submitted a couple of specimen and specimen collection terms to OBI
for diagnostic testing. Terms in your excel sheet may have already existed
in OBI. Please check obi-ontology/obi#1176

I suggest not using mask and respirator as synonyms, because they are not the same thing at all. Even though lay people often use mask for respirator, this is not a different usage, it is actually incorrect (in my view).

Thanks folks for your help. N95 mask is now N95 Respirator. I guess "N95 mask" is ok as a broad synonym, to facilitate text-mining? However, OBI doesn't use broad/narrow etc synonym. It only has "alternate term". I'll check out your specimen/collection terms. |

Perhaps you could include a comment to the effect that using N95 mask as a synonym is discouraged but it is included to facilitate computer searches?

COVID-19 pandemic brought a new set of terms to the spotlight. Via my email with Lindsay Cowell, Barry Smith, John Beverley, Shane Babcock dated April 28,2020, following terms were agreed to be added into IDO:
In the email, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as an IDO term candidate was also discussed. Lindsay Cowell said "Regarding PPE, I agree with the exception that some PPE I think are only for infectious diseases. The PPE worn to treat a SARS-CoV-2 or ebola infected person, for example, exceeds what is worn for surgery."
We all agreed to submit above 3 terms to the issue track in order to track the term updates for IDO.
