A "gt" character inserted in a message

In an email that I've sent to the ietf mailing list, a ">" character has been inserted in the beginning of one of the lines.

That'd be fun to figure out what has done that, and what else it can do.

(Obviously Gmail might be to blame but it's got no track record of adding random characters and if it did it frequently that should've already been on the news)
