I made a visual bug report: https://youtu.be/8zGjA_wEGYU

Summary

  • Currently, it's impossible to create a regular tiling window, if you have only a single floating window, but no already existing tiling windows in the background.
  • You can only convert explicit containers to floating
  • you cannot convert a single floating window to a floating container.

I don’t see a link to logs.i3wm.org. Did you follow https://i3wm.org/docs/debugging.html? (In case you actually provided a link to a logfile, please ignore me.)

Just as a general comment, this kind of container is semi-supported. It has some functionality as an "accident" but we don't consider it a priority to fix bugs.

Checking with i3 4.23 would be great.

Just updated my ArchLinux to latest version, and also the i3 to 4.23:

Result: Same issue.

you speak out exactly what i thought: It works just as an "accident", but it would be amazing, it would work "official" in the future.

By the way, can somebody re-open the issue please?
