I suggest for Greasemonkey API:
GM_statusbar()

It would (somehow) solve the window.status (and windows.defaultStatus) problem:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=842017
(Firefox 21+ - javascript: window.status - and window.defaultStatus - not working)

Thank you for your consideration.

Since Firefox 4 I believe a minority of users have the status bar visible at all, so this would probably be low priority.

Simple example (only outline):
Tree - GM_statusbar
Gist

But Firefox will likely have a better native function (sometimes, perhaps...):
Issue 1194 - "Add GM_notification API"

This is already obsolete...
