We are releasing a new workspace creation page, that is shown on any workspace start and gives users the opportunity to adjust settings such as the IDe, the workspace class, or what organization to start the workspace under.

This is currently rolled out to 50% of our users. If you see this new page, please share what you think and what kind of improvements you would like to see. 🙏

Happy to provide some feedback! Please take it for what it's worth -- just one random data point.

  1. I clicked on a Gitpod button on some repository expecting to start a new workspace
  2. I immediately context-switched to other things (Slack, other tabs, etc) to let the workspace start in the background
  3. At some point I landed back on this page:

This got me very confused. I wondered if I somehow landed on the dashboard page, but the empty state was now looking more complicated. I just started at it for a while, and then I noticed the URL in the URL bar again, which reminded me that I actually wanted to open a specific repository.

Maybe it would be cool to highlight the repository I wanted, very visibly in this page? E.g.

You are trying to open the repository 👉 https://github.com/some/repo 👈
That's cool! Please just select some options and click next

We use this to Quickstart a few users and now some of them are finding reasoning about all of this a bit complex. We can add a click on "New workspace" in our docs but i am wondering if there's a way we can create a link that bypases this?

+1'ing @h4ck3rk3y 's point; I'm a brand-new Gitpod user and I was confused about the options (full transparency: he and I are in the same org).

My thoughts as a new user:

  • "what do each of these choices mean?"
  • "if I select something, can I undo it?"
  • "4 cores and 8GB of RAM... that's a big machine; is this going to be really expensive to me? is this going to be really expensive to our org?"

👋 It is nice to be able to change workspace settings, but I don't need to change anything in my usual workflow. An extra step to get my workspace running often gets me confused, and a bit annoyed because my experience is similar to what @jankeromnes described above.

Would it make sense to make the customization optional through URL params and add the customization to the Browser Extension?
