Unicode characters are generally preserved in GitHub Markdown output, e.g.,

FIGURE SPACE (> <)
NARROW NO-BREAK SPACE (> <)

Weirdly, the same isn't true for

the ordinary U+00A0 NO-BREAK SPACE (> <, it's converted to a breaking space)
