For my master's thesis, I'm working on implementing a cache architecture called Amoeba (original paper here). This involves not only a coherence protocol, but also adding support for variable-granularity cache lines, which are configured on a per-block basis by a predictor. I've scoped out how much effort this will take, and it seems to be significant, as the assumption of constant cache line size permeates quite a lot of Ruby/cache/memory code in gem5.
My 2 questions are:
Is anybody aware of a prior effort in Ruby / gem5 to do something like this (variable cache line size)?
Would this sort of thing be considered helpful to anyone? Not Amoeba specifically, but support for variable line size.
I don't think it would be realistic to add variable granularity support to mainline gem5/Ruby without a significant overhaul, and that's certainly not what I'm aiming for. Just getting this working at all will take enough work.
