Cells can be made "read only" by setting the "editable": false metadata for the cell. However, jupyter-wysiwyg seems to override or ignore this in JLab. The setting does seem to work on markdown cells when this extension is not installed. Regular markdown cells do open the markdown view, but do not allow editing. Something similar would be good behavior for this tool as well. I can see cases where someone might want to be able to copy Latex strings or something like that from the cell.
