Per doc, filebrowser uses JSON auth by default and in quick setup user logs in with
Username: admin
Password: admin
This looks like basic auth to me from user perspective. I did some research to distinguish the two. It appears to me that
for basic auth, username/password credential is sent in clear text in every request;
for JSON auth,
username/password credential is sent in clear text in first request,
server validates credential and returns a JSON Web Token (JWT),
the JWT is sent by client in subsequent requests instead of original credential.
Furthermore, JSON auth supports richer semantics like expiration, etc. Neither auth method is secure unless being carried in a secure TLS tunnel. That said, if I'm to open filebrowser to public Internet, TLS is a must.
My questions are
Is my understanding above correct without missing any significant points?
Filebrowser does not do TLS by default, right? I intend to use caddy as a TLS front-end that reverse proxies to filebrowser via http (not https). Is this a sensible setup?
Pardon me if you found this a dumb question. I'm new to server setup and network security stuff.
