Describe the bug
When using the Action Key "Open in New Tab" with Shift Key pressed to "Open in background Tab" the newly opened background tab is intermittently activated thereby shifting focus from the original source tab.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Navigate to any site that hosts images (I've used DeviantArt, Flickr, Instagram... ).
  2. Load a list of image thumbnails via a search or by selecting a preset option.
  3. Hover over images at random while scrolling/browsing and use the Action Key combination to open loaded images in a new background tab.
  4. After a while notice that the action key combination opens the images in a new tab but then the new tab is activated thereby changing focus from the originating tab.
  5. After navigating back to the originating tab this same behavior appears to happen two to three times after which the correct behavior resumes for a while until the incorrect behavior happens again.

Expected behavior
Using the action key combination to open a image in a new background tab should never shift focus to the new tab and should remain on the original active tab.

  • OS: Windows 11 Professional
  • Browser: Firefox
  • Version: 117.0 (64-bit), fully up to date

Additional context
This is a fairly recent problem. If memory serves it started happening around one to two months ago. Additionally I have ensured that all extensions are fully up to date as well as all Windows updates are applied.

@frankieg1975 Thank you for the detailed bug report. Do you remember by any chance if you had updated Firefox at around the same when the problem started? And another question: does this only happen in Firefox?
