spacy==2.2.1 not installing

Can't install spacy==2.2.1 in python 3.9. It shows the following error

How to reproduce the behaviour

pip3.9 install spacy==2.2.1

Your Environment

• Operating System: Ubuntu 18.04.6
• Python Version Used: 3.9
• spaCy Version Used: 2.2.1

The issue is that spaCy 2.2.1 was released on 2019-10-03, and Python 3.9 was released on 2020-10-05, and therefore didn't exist at the time of the release of this spaCy version. It should be easier to install with Python 3.5-3.7, which were in use at the time of its release.

You might have more luck with spaCy 2.3.9, which is the latest v2 release, and should work with Python 3.9. If that doesn't work for you, please let us know why you're trying to use 2.2.1 - it's a pretty old version.

@polm Thanks for the reply. But we could install spacy==2.2.1 in python 3.9 until 27-Jan-2023 without any issues. But now only it failing. Could you please check whether any latest commits cause the issue?

That can't be due to a change in spaCy - files released on PyPI can't be changed, so the 2.2.1 files have been the same for years. If you have files from your previous runs you can check the md5sums.

Based on the error in your output, maybe something changed in pkg_resources in your environment?

I would strongly recommend you use a Python version with wheels, like I listed above, or upgrade the version of spaCy you're using.

@polm We havnt changed anything in the pkg_resources.
And it seems spacy=2.2.1 installation up on python 3.9 failing across all platforms including google colab.

It's possible that something changed in pip which has upgraded pkg_resources or otherwise changed the way the install is handled. This way you could see a change even if you are using the same requirements.txt, for example. Unfortunately, whatever the cause is, it's not something we can control, and as I said before, the spaCy 2.2.1 files definitely haven't changed.

If you can't use 2.3.9, you could try 2.2.4, which should be very nearly the same as 2.2.1, but not have the issue in your error log.

It looks like an update in setuptools is the cause of this issue, specifically 3790 mentioned in their "breaking changes".
