This package is very useful, but I couldn't find a way to internationalise it. For example, in French, the date would be before the adress and the return adress, then there would be the return adress on the left, and then the adress on the right. How difficult would it be to allow either for a generic linguistic parameter, or to parameterise the layout?

Good question. Over the course of the four related markdown-to-latex packages tint, pinp, binb and linl we have learned how to parameterise a few things. In essence, we can pick up from the YAML header and pass down to the LaTeX layer to ifdef appropriately. Sadly half the time I no longer remember what was where....

But that could be a start for you. Keep the current date as default, add an option to override.

That said, there have always been alternate letter classes for different countries -- someone already did something apart with KOMA for German letters. But if you can get by with just one or two options I might indeed make sense to put it in.

yep,
the KOMA Script letter class is nicely internationalized and the R package komaletter has a language parameter lang: fr among its YAML metadata (see vignette Introduction to komaletter that is passed on to KOMA script.

You could even select a french letter layout for the window envelope style DL with lco: NF.
