@mbjoseph is removing the download dependency from earthpy so we can move to conda-forge. however while testing this PR i noticed that .gz was not supported. Once the pr is merged, we should consdier adding support for all of the following file types that are commonly encountered:

. zip - DONE
.tar.gz - done
.gz

and any others that we id as standard earth data science compression formats.
