In pidgin you can see other users idle time when you hover over the user:

Update: This info is already possible with XEP-0319

It appears that nothing is needed server side, the client just has to implement support for XEP-0319: processone/ejabberd#470 (comment)

nobody said it has to be a forced option, we use xmpp for communication between family members. Knowing how long they have been idle gives us an idea if they are busy or sleeping.

It has been incredibly useful to us as a family.

FWIW, there is stable XEP for that.
