Currently we only have a very rudimentary C header, which will probably also work more or less in C++, however a proper C++ header including classes to handle the resource allocation on the library side would feel more natural for using.

Is this still an issue considering we have a standalone C++ implementation?

I don't think we have feature parity in both implementations yet. It could be useful to provide a C++ API for testing the standalone C++ implementation against the reference implementation provided here at least.
