Summary

Enable the user to easily make an unlocked accessible over the sidebar of the system file manager

Motivation

Currently, we let the os/volume type decide, if the unlocked vault is displayed in the side bar the system file manager. This is not optimal, since once the vault is unlocked, the user wants in general quickly work with the vault, which is not always possible and the user has to use the reveal button in the main UI.

On Linux, the mountpoint is well hidden. On Windows, it is by default neither in the quick access section nor has an own section.

Of course, this option should be optional, i.e. if the user does not want this behaviour, she can disable it. If this should be a general option or a decision for each vault is yet to be decided.

I use Cryptomator on macOS 11.7.10 (Big Sur) with macFUSE. I thought I'd document my specific issue here (#3352) since it seems like it's essentially the same thing. In a nutshell, it like to keep a usable Favorite in the Finder of one of my vaults.

Although I can create a Favorite (see Screenshot 1) that works initially, once I lock the vault, it cannot be used again — even after unlocking. Instead, attempting to use the Favorite will result in an error message saying that "the original item can't be found."

I still believe that this is macFUSE issue. Unfortunately, it was closed without an actual fix: osxfuse/osxfuse#785

Hello - I was able to solve this issue so sharing my workaround. Hope it helps someone.

1. I created a new directory using command line under my "user home" (~).
2. Went to Cryptomator application, locked the vault and then right clicked on it.
3. Pressed "Show vault options" and went to second tab named "Mounting".
4. In the "Mount Point" section, I selected the radio box next to "Use chosen directory", then chose the newly created directory using the "Choose" button.
5. Unlocked my vault; went to home directory in Finder and dragged the vault folder to sidebar.
6. Now even after locking and unlocking, the side-bar shortcut works fine. I have not done a restart yet, hopefully it works after that too!
