The sidebar covers the text when JS is disabled. This is clearly a case for using CSS.
2 Column layouts are a standard CSS thing and no JS is required for that.

I don't know hugo, but the issue is that this particular JS is used for post-processing the html. A static-site generator should be able to do that in the build.
