I am new to this software and would request the experts on this forum to offer some advice. I am referring to CIS benchmark 4.4.2 for Kubernetes which states "Consider external secret storage". As cert-manager would create secrets as a K8s secret resource, would it go against this CIS recommendation? What would be the possible security downside, if any, if the private key of the certificate is stored as a K8s secret resource? The only thing that comes to my mind is that K8s secrets are stored using base64 encoding, which is not encryption. However, the secret itself can be configured to use strong encryption algorithm using cert-manager. Please advise.
