Remap Search key to Caps Lock

Has anyone been successful remapping their Search key to a CapsLock function? After all my 'net searching and trying xmodmap, setxkbmap, etc., etc., I remain unsuccessful remapping the Search key; it persists in being a Super key.

I've successfully remapped all the dedicated keys (top Fkeys) on my Chromebook (by editing the /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/pc file; thanks Captain), so they perform the same functions as under ChromeOS a few exceptions*.

*The Mute/VolUp/VolDn keys don't work. I expect this is because the XF86Audio* directives are set to work on other via alsa? But I was able to create custom shortcuts under gnome that use the Ctrl-Up and Ctrl-Dn keys to handle audio up/down by executing amixer set Master 5%[-|+].

The only thing I found that worked was to actually alter /usr/share/X11/xkb/keycodes/evdev to assign <CAPS> = 133. Doing so prevents the system from treating it as a Super key. All the other attempts via xmodmap or modifying key assignments via /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols did not affect the Search key. Based upon this article, others have had similar challenges in remapping.
