The share of women in computer science started falling at roughly the same moment when personal computers started showing up in U.S. homes in significant numbers. Because the early PC's were marketeed primarily to boys, a narrative developed suggesting they were only for boys. When those boys went to college, they studied computers. Hence, the early tech industry was male-dominated.
