Simply running bbs_build_env sets the environment to subsequently configure a build to be unoptimized, but with debug symbols. In my experience, this is atypical with open-source software. Most open source packages default to build with optimizations; the user must manually elect to perform a "debug build". Defaulting to an optimized build may align software built with the BDE build system better to open source expectations.

Thanks. We were actually just discussing the defaults of bbs_build_env (it will be changed to 64bit). We will likely make the change suggested here.
