A lot of organic substrates are being picked up under fermentation substrates used/not used but are not being picked up under organic compounds used/not used. By definition, fermentation substrates will be organic compounds.

Just picking one taxon as a random example:
MicroPIE picks up as fermentation substrates used: "glucose|maltose|pullulan|trehalose" (these are all organic compounds)
MicroPIE picks up as fermentation substrates not used:" D-arabitol|D-raffinose|D-ribose|D-xylose|L-arabinose|cyclodextrin|glycogen|lactose|mannitol|melezitose|melibiose|sorbitol|sucrose|tagatose" (these are all organic compounds)
But for the same description
MicroPIE picks up as organic compounds used: "Aesculin"
MicroPIE picks up as organic compounds not used: "Hippurate|gelatin"
