WikiHow QA - User Guide

The WikiHow QA Application has four main features:

  1. Answer "How to" Questions
  2. Summarize provided text
  3. Analyse, Compare & Rate summarization techniques
  4. View Statistics of summarization techniques

You can read more about each feature and how to use it below. Please note that there is a short FAQ (LINK) at the bottom of this page.

Feature 1: "How to..." Questions

This is the Question Answering Component of WikiHow QA. The image below shows the input mask as well as the answers. Alt text Note that there are two answers. The "Short Instructions" box shows the summarized answer, wheras the "Detailed Instructions" box shows the full detailed answer to the question. The "Short Instructions" box also contains a button asking the user to provide a better summary, if the current one is not satisfying. As shown in the image below, clicking on this button reveals a text input field, where the user can type the summary. Alt text The input mask consists of a simple input field for the question as well as a drop down menu to select the summarization method. While typing in the input field, the system will suggest possible questions. These suggestion can be selected either with the arrow keys and enter key or simply with a mouse click. See the image below to get an idea of the auto completion. Alt text

Feature 2: Summarize provided text

This is the summarization component of WikiHow QA. The image below shows the input mask with some example text as well as it's summary. Alt text Similar as with the Question Answering component, the input mask consists of a simple text input field for the text and a drop down menu to select the summarization method.

Feature 3: Evaluate summarization techniques

An image of the the "User Studies" or Analysis component of WikiHow QA can be seen below. Alt text The output is organized a little bit differnt compared to the other components. One or more summaries are shown on the left side and the full answer is shown on the right side. In contrast to the previous features, this component has a very complex input mask. Again, there is an input field for the question as well as a drop down menu to select the summarization method. Moreover, there are various checkboxes to select different types of Named Entities. The selected types are visualized in the summary as well as the the full answer as seen in the image above. Also, it is possible to hightlight keywords in the texts as in the image above or just display them as a list as it can be seen below. Alt text Lastly, the user can choose to show ROUGE scores. These ROUGE scores are calculated by comparing the summary generated by a certain method with the gold summary. Therefore, the "gold" or "cheating" method will always have the maximum ROUGE score. Below you can see the visualization of the ROUGE scores for a certain summarization technique. Alt text Please also note, that there is a possibility to submit a rating for each summary (at the bottom of each summary). These ratings are collected and can be viewed in the Statistics component, which is the fourth feature of WikiHow QA.

Feature 4: Statistics of summarization techniques

The statistics component of WikiHow QA visualizes collected ratings. Both, the total ratings graph as well as the average ratings per day graph for a certain summarization techniqu are shown below. Alt text On the left side, the total ratings graph shows how many and which star ratings a certain summarization technique recieved. On the right side, the average ratings per day graph visualizes the change of the ratings over time for a certain summarization technique. Next to that, basic statistics like the number of total votes are displayed. By scrolling down this page, the user can view the visualizations for other summarization techniques.

FAQ

Lastly, it collects new summaries and ratings for summaries from users, which are also used to evaluate the summarization methods.

How does WikiHow QA work?

The WikiHow QA Application does not work like ordinary QA systems. It utilizes a huge database of already answered "How to..." questions to give the correct answer. But since these anwers tend to be very long and detailed, the WikiHow QA Application utilizes different summarization techniques, to reduces these answers to a more appealing size. In short: Depending on the question WikiHow QA retrieves an already existing answer and then summarizes it.
