Often we are restoring old functionality and see improvements we would like to make to the API, but that's not the goal for this refactor.

This an issue to dump thoughts on improvements/changes to the API to revisit later.

@effigies "better future" is meant as a metaphor or do you mean Python future import functionality?

Updated description for clarity. "a better future" -> "improvements we would like to make to the API".
