I'm a contributor for RetroArch, an open source retro gaming frontend. For reasons involving compatibility and licensing, the Steam release doesn't use the Steam Input API and migrating to it isn't in the cards. This means that there's no way for RetroArch to directly use the Steam Deck's built-in sensors in supported games (e.g. for emulating motion-enabled GBA cartridges). Contributions like this one can't make use of the Deck's fullest capabilities.

However, I was recently made aware of a new patch that exposes the Deck's gyroscope and accelerometer to udev. It was submitted on April 20th; it might take a while before it's merged into the kernel upstream, and it might take even longer until it makes it to SteamOS. Would you be willing to merge this patch into the SteamOS kernel?

I agree, this would be a good thing to support.

It looks like the patch itself is on its way to being merged upstream, although I don't know how long it would take to make its way into SteamOS when that happens.
