南华早报里提到了这句:

Terminus2049 appeared to be blocked in mainland China on Saturday.

请问Terminus2049是host在GitHub上的项目,当局怎么单单封杀Terminus2049而不封杀整个GitHub??

It is hard to understand how the CCP censorship machine works in detail.

One theory is that blocking this repo through gov-takedowns is too transparent and allows people to clearly see what the CCP wants to censor.

And blocking the entire github.com would of course lead to too much economic damage for China.

Luckily we have GreatfFire Analyzer to determine which domains are blocked.

@cirosantilli Thanks for your great analysis. My question is thus: blocking Google entirely would not lead to too much economic damage for China, but blocking github would? Couldn't China come up with its own Github replacement inside the Great Firewall??? (Like it did with Baidu for Google, and Weibo for Twitter, and BiliBili for YouTube?)

@posclegom I think search engines and user provided content websites are fundamentally different, because to make a search engine all you need is one algorithm almost as good as Google's. But you can't force every Western developer to move to a Chinese website once GitHub has so much momentum.

But yes, they must make a tradeoff between economic impact and how many users are in the platform to organize a revolution. GitHub has very few users and is very very important economically. If it gathers more users, it will get banned. Twitter and YouTube have a ton of users, but low value per user, and high revolution organization potential

I realized another thing just now. To a certain extent, Twitter and YouTube are natural language based, so most of the Western content is useless to most Chinese people. But programming languages are to some extent the same to all nationalities.

TO cirosantilli

Thank you so much for your excellent explanation, with the above comparisons form you I finally understand why GitHub is not banned despite so many years in operation and hosting so much anti-communist contents.

@cirosantilli at some point in the near future, with the universalization of DoH and ESNI, all web traffic will become opaque and look the same to each other doesn't matter what website you are browsing. And the authorities will no longer be able to know which websites you are browsing. At that time do you think the communists will finally go and cut off China from the global Internet?

I didn't know about those techniques. Gut feeling is that yes, if unable to block specific sites only, CCP will try to fork the internet completely.

@cirosantilli we have the exaaaaaaaaaaaact same views here. Let's shake hands. When that day truly comes, I don't know whether I'm gonna laugh or cry. Because while it will mean that people in China will no longer be able to use the real Internet, it also means that we will see a great reduction in the number of communist-hired trolls and spammers that are littering the various forums both here and on other websites and blogs located outside the Great Firewall.
