Characteristic definitions allow the number of decimal places or the number of significant figures to be specified via the attributes of the child element ToleranceValue. This could be used by a reporting software package to decide how many decimal places/significant figures to use to display measured values. However, it would be necessary to send this data with each item of measurement data. It would be more convenient if it was possible to set the number of dp/sf globally so that all angular values, for example, had a specified default accuracy and all linear values another. The attribute assigned to a specific ToleranceValue element would then override the global setting.
