Trees growing into items near them

I planted a large number of trees fairly close together. When they had grown, some were missing chunks of the trunk. From what I can tell, the last tree grows and if a portion of its leaves grows where a trunk is, it replaces the trunk block with leaves.

I am currently waiting for more to grow so I can test if this happens to other blocks such as stone or if leaves only replace wood blocks. Will add more comments if so.

Also, and maybe connected: Some of my trees grew 1-2 blocks in the air instead of at ground level where the sapling was placed.

i've seen some builds on my server doing this. overwrites stone blocks on users' builds.
