I see from the previous (#16) that padmalcolm is using a TB6600 so this has potentially answered my question...

The GPIOs are 3.3v and I have 3 x TB6600's to control. I understand that the TB6600's have optocouplers but are the GPIO's 5v tolerant?

I see this in the chip spec (Page 1):
Up to 55 fast I/Os
– All mappable on external interrupt vectors
– Up to 55 I/Os with 5V tolerant capability

Here: https://www.st.com/resource/en/datasheet/stm32f030f4.pdf

But felt it better to seek advice - I have bought 2 x RTk.GPIO boards and did not want to fry one by simply jumping in the water!
