SUMMARY

With guard mode activated, the ai pilot will not try to open cargo bays on the plane in which the currently selected weapon is located. If the bay doors are closed, the ai pilot will not fire, but if they are already opened for it, it will fire properly, so it knows and acknoledges the state of the bay doors correctly. I tried with all stock cargo bays such as the mk2 and mk3 bays, or the s1 and s2 service bays. The issue is persistent no matter what weapon or on what kind of rack they are attached to. But surprisingly, the ai pilot is caple of using inline s1 cargo bays from the AirplanePlus mod. It seems this issue has already been reported in 2016 as issue#36 in BahamutoD's repository : BahamutoD#36 (comment)

Also, with working cargo bays : in a case where a certain weapon would be stored between 2 cargo bays, the Ai pilot will only open one of the two and explode its own ship. It will also refuse to let me open the other one manually, and close it itself right after. That's why i suggest the implementation of a custom action manager, in which we could tell the ai pilot to a custom action while using a certain weapon, or entering a specific flight mode. It would add a lot of new possibilities, and would let us tell exactly what cargo bay or, for instance, Braking ground robotics to use when needed.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

Modlist : BDA, Physics Range Extender, Module Manager 4.2.1
-Spawn two ships with a weapon manager in different teams
-Activate ai pilot and guard mode on one of the aircraft which has its weapons sotred in a cargon bay (any weapon, any stock cargo bay)
-Watch said ship aim at the other, and do nothing as its bay doors are closed (or open them yourself and it will fire correctly)

For the custom action manager, the instructions could look like this :
-When using Vulcan cannon, perform custom action n°2 to open this cargo bay
-When entering Engage mode, perform custom action n°5 to retract this part of the wing
-When entering Orbiting mode, switch lights on
...
