I was tracing over a model, here a cube whose edge is a perfectly regular line (the line goes up every 3 pixels to the right):
I drawing a line from bottom-left to top-right, and as you can see the line algorithm is not drawing a regular line, with steps of 2, 4, 4, 2 (note that the last pixel under the cursor/crosshair is not represented, but there will be one there - that's another issue, see #994)
This is a known limitation of common line algorithms (probably Bresenham) explained in depth on this Aseprite thread:

GIMP found a solution to tackle regular lines when needed, the same could be done.
Since irregular lines are also useful in some art, an option (or modifier key to hold) would give us the option to switch mode when we want to.
