How do I create a custom formula for the pivot table as the readme suggests?

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

Although debug="assets" the custom fields are not shown in the dropdown.
If I show the field via manually changing the view I get the following error:

What am I missing?
Where do I define the custom formula?
