Operations

Our operations have been greatly improved and fine-tuned over the years. Our co-founder Jordi (COO) is in charge of operations, but some of these activities are distributed across different people and providers.

Well, providers are people too.

Day to day & reference

Being 100% remote means that we've got no office. Thus, little to no operations are required in this regard.

Mostly, we've got three big categories of operations.

  • Accounting & numbers: All things related to bookkeeping, accounting, reports and all that jazz is mostly spearheaded by Jordi. We've got an accountant company we outsource a big part of this to - Altisent - and Leire helps Jordi with this area, too.
  • People operations: Otherwise known as HR & administration, mostly commandeered by Leire. She is the ultimate enabler of everyone in the company and a pivotal role, central to all.
  • Marketing and sales: Àlex leads these areas. Jordi and Xavi (and some developers, occasionally) step in to help with the confection of proposals for clients, and Leire helps with the organisation of events, running the YouTube channel and the newsletters.

Accounting & numbers

All expenses need to be sent to administration@marsbased.com with the invoice or a photo of the receipt.

We share the numbers of the company in every Martian Day and occasionally on Basecamp (approximately once per term), but feel free to ask for more information about anything anytime.

People operations

Leire sits in the middle of our non-existent office and is the real catalyser of everything that happens in the company. She makes everyone's days better and of MarsBased a great place to work in.

Anything related to logistics and how to make your day better, ask her. This includes the benefits & perks of being a MarsBased employee and much more.

Leire is also in charge of the organisation of the Startup Grind Barcelona events and our bigger ones like the Startup Grind Tech conference and the Corporate Innovation Summit, and some of our marketing efforts, like the MarsBased newsletter or our YouTube channel.

Marketing and sales

Àlex is in charge of finding deals and bringing them to the quote stage. Then, more technical people will create the estimate and the quote document so Àlex can send it and follow up on to close the deal.

We're purely an inbound company. This means that companies find us, not the other way around. We need to make it easier for them to find us. Therefore, there are a few things we do to ease this process.

  • Website: Our website is extremely fine-tuned in terms of SEO. In such a competitive landscape, we need to make sure people find us, and we're ranking very high in most interesting searches, purely by organic means.
  • Blog: Also on the website, we publish a blog entry every week. Some are technical, some are about entrepreneurship, news of the company, sector insights or how-tos. If you're interested in blogging for the company, ping Àlex.
  • Podcast: In 2020, we launched Life on Mars, in two languages, alternating between them on a weekly basis. Àlex runs this.
  • YouTube: To complement our podcast efforts, we have also our profile on YouTube, where we also upload our talks from other events. Leire runs it.
  • Social media: We invest little time in this because it doesn't yield great results. But it's nice to be present and the social profiles amplify our message and help to spread our content to new audiences.
  • Newsletter: We send a newsletter once a month and we've got really good numbers. Leire is in charge of the MarsBased newsletter.
  • Events: Our Startup Grind events are also part of this. We don't like to mix up stuff, but we're sponsoring and organising the event, and therefore we need to take credit for it as well. We host a monthly event with our team of volunteers.
  • Community work: We curate a Slack community and Startup Digest in Barcelona, which you read about on the Community page on the website. Both are managed between Àlex and Leire.
