Quick access to some communities

Describe the solution you'd like.

Add some flag to community. Could be called pinned/favourite/starred. This way front will be able to create pinned communities in the sidebar. Add option to pin community in the community view for all users.

(PhotonUI ticket: Xyphyn/photon#286)

Describe alternatives you've considered.

Lemmy's interface really only shows Trending communities, but I don't know how useful those are, and I'd be in favor of entirely getting rid of it.

Rather than adding an interface for admins to pin and highlight communities, and yet another block to highlight these, IMO it'd be better to add those to your site sidebar, or as a tagline like I see some sites doing.

Site sidebar? But it's per user. Not globally pinned. Everybody has their own set of favourite communities.

How is that different from subscribed?

This way front will be able to create pinned communities in the sidebar.

I'm really confused now. Users don't have their own sidebars, they have their own Bios tho. Community and site sidebars are shared, not per-user.

They don't in LemmyUI. They might have though. It's just a front client. You could move user context to sidebar as well. In PhotonUI there is a good place for that.

I forgot about subscribed. I guess we can first try with these, maybe it'll do it. But there is a difference though. You eventually might have a lot, let's say 30 subscribed communities. But you only want 5 of them to be pinned. Pinned is for very fast access. No need to scroll or do any search. Just one click. You can't do that when you have 30 communities.
