Use thermostat status as trigger in HA

I am trying to come up with an automation that will change the target temp on my Hive thermostat based on the status of the Better Thermostat entity. When I look at the card for the BT, if it is below the target temp it shows idle and when it opens the valve that switches to heating. How can I read that in HA? I can see mode but that's not what I'm looking for here, I want to be able to read if the TRV is actually open vs not?

Is that under device or entity when using it as a trigger? I can't see it, I can only see current action?

Yes, on the UI it's "current action". In yaml "hvac_action".

I'm using the value "heating" and then changed from or to.

Thanks, I'll give that a try! Do you know if it's possible to create a group with this variable so I can create logic on an "if any" are heating or does it need to be done in the automation?

Of course you can create a template sensor, with a condition of all your thermostats.
