Is there a way to use wb$open() to open a file saved via wb_save ?

Yes, xl_open(). But you have to provide the path and cannot use it in a pipe, because I vetoed against wb_save() returning a path.

path <- temp_xlsx()

get_path <- function(x) {
  x$path
}

wb_workbook() |> 
  wb_add_worksheet() |>
  wb_add_data(x = mtcars) |>
  wb_save(path) |>

  xl_open()
