We recently had a situation in our staging environment that led to a bit of investigation into what happened and required cloud.gov's support. The root cause wasn't identified, but what we did learn is that some additional logging could be enabled that would provide greater visibility into what's happening in the instances, which would be very useful for any future issues.

We have an open support ticket with cloud.gov to enable some additional logging for our RDS instances, and we need to determine what would be most appropriate for us so they can enable it.

Implementation Sketch and Acceptance Criteria

  • Read through the AWS RDS PostgreSQL documentation to determine what's most useful for us
  • Follow-up with cloud.gov to have the new logging enabled and check with them that the new information is available

Security Considerations

  • This additional logging will be at the AWS level and therefore only accessible to cloud.gov platform operators; we'd still need to open support tickets with them to get more information or look into an issue.
  • This will help us (and cloud.gov) in troubleshooting any future issues with our RDS intances.
