Good intel from BadCamp in convos with @jenlampton and @kreynen re: Backdrop CMS organization..
Related questions: Is non profit the right approach? Does no profit mean slow dev? Does team leadership prevent East India Company like tactics of Automattic? Could a for profit model work just as well? Ie- Patagonia ("we are making money to do good"). What are other pluses/minuses of non profit vs for profit? |

This isn't quite right. There was an open discussion about leadership, and then there was a PMC. Backdrop never had a "dictator". For reference, here is the discussion on the decision making model for Backdrop CMS: backdrop/backdrop-issues#59. This issue was opened on Sept 12, 2023 -- so, immediately when the project was forked. A decision was reached long before Jan 15, 2015 - the date of the 1.0.0 release. |

@kreynen brought up the need to talk about governance. Here are some very rough ideas to start a discussion around the topic:
Governance ensures an open culture where diverse viewpoints thrive.
That said, governance can also impede progress. I've been part of a number of projects that focused so much on rules and procedures that tools never got built.
To promote progress while remaining good, Equalify code is published under the AGPL. That means that anyone can fork the project and use the code if they don't like the direction we're taking. (I hope people file issues around any ethical concerns before they fork - ethical bugs are mission-critical.)
As far as the "who does what" part of governance, for now I am benevolent owner of the repo. I hope to give access to regular contributors in the near future, working out deployment procedures with those contributors.
My end goal is not to be a Dries or Mullenweg of Equalify. I want to hand over control to others. I also want Equalify to remain accessible and open.
