I am an user of myElggsite dot com and my friend is an user of AnotherElggsite dot com. I should be able to log in to AnotherElggsite dot com with my identity as myself@myElggsite dot com. This should be as easy as installing Elgg itself, without any manipulation, weird set-ups or anything. If a site-super-Admin wants he can TURN OFF or ON this feature. Okay.
Now after logging into another Elgg site with my Elggsite's credentials, and if that site-super-admin has enabled
I should be able to see the public posts of that site
I should be able to add Friends - for example my friendlist will show ABC@Red-Elgg dot com, DEF@Green-Elgg com, XYZ (without any @etc which means she is at the same site as me) - I hope you get the idea
I should be able to like and/or comment on a post (and save it to my Bookmarks Folder B) if that site-admin has enabled this and that site-user has marked the post as PUBLIC for the entire network (and not just for his site)
I am not making any comments about Notifications and Groups as of now but just sharing the idea ON blog posts and wire messages and Friend's list, and possibly private messages.
Is your feature request related to a problem?
Hubzilla, Diaspora, Friendica, Idno/known etc are way behind Elgg in terms of various usability and features but Remote Authentication almost magically happens (no hassles in installation, no manual fiddling) for example in Hubzilla. Elgg, I think have codes for this already inside it BUT it needs to present itself in a smooth, default (on or off) and all-pervading way to make it MORE and more popular. Once many Elgg sites can log into ONE ANOTHER and can communicate with ONE ANOTHER in terms of posts, comments, Likes, Frienship etc the usage of Elgg can become very popular not just now but also in future as more and more folks are looking for decentralized options with data freedom (and privacy), and can attract more and more Devs too.

A feature can hardly be incorporated before its too late - so it will be great if a means of collective fund, where all those who are willing to pay the Devs collectively, is set up highlighting the target amount ($) and the target time. This sort of feature needs quick deployment provided we can set up the funds or have a very generous sponsor! A VERY USEFUL feature delayed is a feature denied!
