Audience tweets with photos were featured during the live show in order to involve the audience. This included pets wearing crowns, a celebration award cake, kids watching with their families and finalists in branded t-shirts and bow ties. This was an engaging and lively element of the show.
We also encouraged the audience to comment in the YouTube chat box which proved popular.
Briefing all of the contributors some weeks before: Ein BBB Meeting aufsetzte, in welchem wir erklären wann in der Verleihung was passiert.

DINAcon 2020 Awards: Very Radical edition

The DINAcon event is an annual event organized by the Research Centre Digital Sustainability of the University of Bern. This year's edition is exceptionally held online due to current travel restrictions. The online event will offer a series of online presentations and lightening talks, as well as the DINAcon Awards and a virtual Hacknight. The DINAcon Awards are annually awarded to people or communities who make a difference in the Free Software, Open Data and Digital Sustainability domain. In this document we are brainstorming some ways to "funk up the style" and make up for the inability to celebrate on location with an online experience.

Requirements
* Low budget - we can spend around max 1 thousand $ on production
* Low time - we have less than one month to organize this by October 23
* Every nominee project needs to be briefly mentioned with a logo / URL / screenshot
* The award winner teams are announced and appear live to accept their award
* Our team and nominees should not have to jump through too many technical hurdles
* The conference participants need to be able to follow the awards through a video stream
* The ceremony should leave lasting impressions, be spontaneous, fun, sparkly, and open source

Categories

There will be nominees and winners across each of the following:

* Best Open Source Project
* Best Newcomer
* Best Practice
* Best Open Data Project
* Best Open Education Project

inspirations
* A MAZE. / Berlin is an International Festival focusing on arthouse games and playful media. Their event this year, including public awards ceremony, was run completely in a custom VR space. Oleg was an attendee. https://2020.amaze-berlin.de/schedule/
* The 30th igNobel prize ceremony featured paper printable awards, simple but funny animations overlays, and Megatons of boondogglery. Note that the much of the broadcast was pre-recorded. Watch it on https://youtu.be/Amkyp-dhYX0

Ideas

IDEA 0. Video conference

A video conference room with nominees being presented by a speaker. The presentation and all interactions happen using slides and video & audio in a typical videoconference setting.

BBB 👉 https://bigbluebutton.org/
* We can use whiteboards and other BBB tools to make things a bit more interactive
* Anything that involves offline activities (paper printouts, costumes, props) works
* Have a look at other events that have been run using BBB
* Ask around in the BBB community e.g. https://twitter.com/Wechange_alot/status/1296790402457112582
* pro: This is our main tool and we have highest confidence it will just work
* con: Limited interaction / standard e-classroom setup

OBS 👉 https://opensource.com/article/20/8/obs-virtual-webcam
* Streamers use a variety of tools to augment their webcam image, add props and special F/X
* The article above outlines some open source tools that we could use as well
* A closed source and possibly easier to use software of this kind is https://facerig.com/
* An open source experimental project is here https://github.com/mohemohe/FaceMig-Bridge
* con: This may require installation on the computers of the presenters

IDEA 1: virtual reality

Set up an interactive session using an open source virtual reality meeting platform, and stream content (audio & video) to BBB using a virtual camera/cameraperson.

Mozilla Hubs 👉 https://hubs.mozilla.com
* use a virtual space for connecting the DINAcon OK Team as well as nominees / finalists
* we tested streaming Hubs room via screensharing BBB -> high resolution but slow & laggy
* participants require decent hardware setup for > 30 FPS in VR
* we could design our own levels, e.g. based on Welle7 interior layout
* ask people from local community to help e.g. https://form.ch/3d-angebote/3d-renderings
* here is an example stage we can collaborate on https://hub.link/ExboyVE
* see instructions here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/hubs-room-experience
* maximum 25 people recommended in a room - up to 1xx in the lobby
* Avatar via https://readyplayer.me
* https://hubs.mozilla.com/docs/intro-events.html

pro: fun, unexpected, highly interactive
con: maybe too complex for first timers to participate

Vircadia 👉 https://vircadia.com/
* relative newcomer and not tested by us yet
* less cartoony, possibly with some features relevant to us
* we may need to host our own server, which might be expensive/tricky
* not clear how many participants are supported

IDEA 2: flatland with avatars

Instead of having a three dimensional meeting room, we could do the ceremony in two dimensions, which is easier to interact with and still provides a quirky experience. Almost everyone knows top down or isometric games (e.g. The Sims ...) where movement is point-and-click or with arrow keys.

Gather Town 👉 https://gather.town/
* very easy to get started in
* possible to create custom maps
* hosts up to 2000 people (!?)
* see other features here https://gather.town/features
* not open source, not sure what it will cost
