Can we run at half-precision and get reasonable results? feel like that might be a first step

I would start with making sure that Float32 gives the right results. (Not sure it does)

Not sure if 100% joke (I was also interested in trying out TPUs at some point) but I think XLA.jl (Julia on TPUs) is dead for now: JuliaGPU/XLA.jl#45 (comment)

Maybe XLA.jl is one of the many steps @jakebolewski alluded to...
